Lose the lads mags!! – Object & UK Feminista campaign

30 May

Lads’ mags promote sexist attitudes and behaviours. They normalise the idea that it’s acceptable to treat women like sex objects.

But customers and shop employees don’t have to put up with it any longer! UK Feminista and Object have obtained brand new legal advice showing that displaying and selling lads’ mags and papers with Page 3-style front cover images can constitute sexual harassment or sex discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. Employees could take legal action against shops on this basis. Where the magazine is visibly on display, customers could also have a claim.

The writing’s on the wall for retailers: by selling lads’ mags they are open to legal action. But these companies will only act to avoid this if they think enough people know about it. Can you sign the petition to lads’ mags retailers and then share with your friends?

The SWP and rape: why I care about this Marxist-Leninist implosion | Laurie Penny | Comment is free | The Guardian

Sexism on the left is the punch you weren’t expecting.

The scandal is not just that a senior party member was accused of raping a young female activist, […] but that the party responded by convening its own court and decide whether rape had occurred. They decided that it hadn’t.

The Socialist Workers Party it is disintegrating because its leadership cannot confront its own misogyny.

What is undermining left and liberal movements is a terminal refusal to confront our own internalised sexism.

In the case of the SWP, that response was formalised last week by the demand that party members accept the decision of the disputes committee that no rape had occurred.

The SWP has previously taken admirable stances on holding public figures like Julian Assange and George Galloway to account on issues of women’s rights. Unfortunately, it has failed to apply the same principles to its own leaders.

Socialism without feminism, after all, is no socialism worth having.
