One of the main purposes of Feminism is to define, establish and defend equal political, economic, and social rights for women.
Many of us often forget that the freedoms and rights that women have come to enjoy today, such as vote and education, are the result of a long and hard-fought struggle by feminists. Many argue that feminism is no longer needed; however, we think there are still numerous issues to be addressed.
Today many women and men fear to admit their feminist concerns due to the negative (and rather uninformed) stereotypes often associated with the notion of being “a feminist”. Fear not. ‘Feminists of Westminster Unite’ is here to provide you with a platform for discussion of these issues. This is where you come to explore the nature of gender inequality and fight sexism.
Some of the core points that we stand for:
– Equal pay and equal opportunities for both women and men
– Reproductive rights (access to contraceptives and abortion)
– Protection from domestic violence and sexual harassment
– Workplace rights (maternity leave, etc)
We are also interested in various other feminist issues, such as sex industry, sex trafficking and women’s representation in media. Feminism is also concerned with men’s liberation, as men are also subject to sexism and gender roles. We are not limited to exploring feminism in the context of UK only – we are in fact also interested in international and global perspectives, for instance, the issues of women’s rights in Muslim countries.
You do not have to have an in-depth understanding of different movements and ideologies of Feminism to become an active member of our society. Whether you are an experienced feminist activist, a supporter or someone who is genuinely interested in participating – all are welcome to join.
‘Feminists of Westminster Unite’ will hold in various events, such as film screenings, talks by invited guests, discussions with feminist groups, debates, workshops, etc. We are also looking to create our own blog, where you can post and share your own articles or commentaries on feminist issues! Please join our society! We want your ideas! Looking forward to hearing from you!
